what does faith look like?

What you do in the in-between moments matters. Or, as I like to think of it, what you do on a Thursday.

I think a lot about what faith looks like on a Thursday, and I show up here every week to tell you about it, because I've learned that faith isn't just for Sundays or when it feels easy.

There is an opportunity to practice faith every day of the week, in every moment. With every word you say, with every activity you choose.

Faith is the proof that what you can't see actually does exist. Where I get tripped up is how faith exists only in the gap between what I know to be true and what I actually experience.

In the in-between. In the empty. In the "nothing."

In the uncomfortable places, basically. The places where I hate to be.

That's where faith resides.

The Passion Translation says faith "becomes the foundation needed to acquire the things we long for."

Which means, when we long to see the goodness of God made manifest in our lives, faith is the bridge we stand on that connects us to it.

So, in those moments between what we know and what we see, what does that bridge of faith look like?

Sunday faith might look like attending church or having a sabbath day or quiet time with Jesus. The things we can easily point to and say, "That's the bridge I'm standing on." The things we do because we’re more sure that they will help.

But Thursday faith? That feels harder to point to – because Thursday faith looks more like things we’re not really sure will help.

Thursday faith, to me, looks like intentionally declaring the truth and grace of God in the midst of what looks like a desert around me.

Thursday faith, to me, looks like packing my things into boxes before I even know I'm moving – or that it was really God speaking.

Thursday faith, to me, looks like fasting because scripture says that some things only come through prayer and fasting, and I really want that breakthrough.

Thursday faith, to me, looks like being picky about what I watch on Netflix because if your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light.

Thursday faith is kind of like "indirect" faith. I might not be able to draw direct parallels to prove that fasting has been one of the most significant catalysts for change in my life, but since I started fasting once a week, I've noticed that I speak more boldly and I have more patience.

Is that a coincidence? No. But is it a clear transaction that fasting = boldness and patience? Also no.

Because God is not transactional. Thursday faith reminds me of that – that He moves in immeasurably more ways than I can even know.

In a world where we are hesitant to do things without being sure that it will yield positive results, Thursday faith says do it anyway.

The power of God is in you, even on a Thursday.
